Fill the Light event

Eltham Arts have prioritized the wellness of our community by using arts to keep that light of hope shining within our hearts. We invited the community to our Fill the light event to uplift community spirits through making arts and enjoying music.

We invited the members of the community to design lanterns using natural and recycled materials. The participants worked with professional artists learning about a new art form and developing a new skill. They children enjoyed learning the history of Warli art (an old Indian traditional art form) that we used to decorate our lanterns. We all got together with our beautiful lanterns to enjoyed an evening of music and food at Passey Place to celebrate being happy, hopeful and a bonded community.

We would like to thank Eltham Library for their support, our local councillors for supporting us through the project by participating in the workshop and the event. Thanks to our local social media groups and the SE9 magazine for helping us spread the word about the project. We are also very thankful to the Royal Borough of Greenwich for making this happen.

‘Aspects of Winter – The Eltham Collection’ – CD launch 2 July

CD-Design-HW-WhiteWriting

We will soon have our own CD. During the Eltham Arts Festival 2015 there was a Winter Song Challenge. Local musicians were challenged to write a song about Winter. The songs revealed the incredible song writing talent within our community. Many of these were performed at our Festival Finale event at the White Hart.

Ten of these have now been recorded and a CD is being produced. We are launching the CD at Capital Art Gallery 13 Well Hall Parade, SE9 6SP on Saturday 2 July. Call in between 3pm and 6pm to meet the musicians, hear some of them perform live, hear the CD and to buy a copy.

The tracks were recorded at a ‘pop-up studio’ in Eltham with technical services volunteered by Alex Wingham and Phil Saatchi,. The result is a fabulous CD capturing the original songs by ten local talented musicians who are passionate about their music.

A short film, ’The Making of a CD: ‘Aspect of Winters – The Eltham collection’, is available to watch NOW on the Eltham Arts YouTube Channel.

Featuring contemplative songs on the winter theme, the CD focuses on a folk and blues style with both mellow and upbeat tracks. The artists on the CD include:

•Angela McCarron (guitar and vocals)
• Alan Cummings (guitar and vocals)
• The Gillies (Susan Turner and Mark Evans on guitar and vocals)
• John Handley (guitar and vocals)
• Terry Timmons (vocals)
• Zahira al Zahira (guitar and vocals) and Dave Kenningham (guitar and vocals)
• Keith Ferris (guitar, harmonica and vocals)• Stephen Brayne (guitar and vocals)
• Tony Clarke (guitar and vocals)
• Eltham AllStars (Dave Kenningham (guitar and vocals) plus, John Handley (harmonica),  Zahira al Zahira, Gaynor Wingham, The Gillies and Alex Wingham)

A specially-commissioned front cover, seen here above, was kindly designed by local artist Himani Weir reflecting the winter theme of the lyrics and something of the wooded landscape in and around the SE9 area.

The CD (£8) can be purchased at the 2 July launch and after then by following details on the Eltham Arts website www.Elthamarts.org

We are enormously grateful for all the many voluntary skills and talents donated to give us this marvelous CD, something of which we can all be proud. Above all, we think the CD is yet another great way of bringing the community together, showcasing the creative and artistic talents of Eltham and having fun!   See you at the launch!

Eltham Arts in 2016

Since last year’s successful Winter Festival, the Eltham Arts committee has been busy planning its activity for 2016.

Winter Song CD
Some of you may remember we organised a Winter Song Competition as part of the festival, in which songwriters performed their songs at the finale at The White Hart on Eltham High Street, on 22 November. We’re pleased to let you know that we are planning to record a CD of the 10 Winter Festival songs, which will be available to buy in due course.

Winter Festival 2016
We’re also delighted to announce that the second Eltham Arts Winter Festival will take place between 29 October-20 November 2016.

We’re working on the format now, so if you have any creative ideas, or would like to be involved, do let us know.
