Writing on a Wall

Photo for WOAW publicity 5

A short story and poetry creative writing challenge. This is on the theme of WALLS around us.  This is an exciting topic which encourages people to think about the walls around them and be inspired to express themselves creatively in prose or poetry. It may be a wall on a house or historic building, a wall dividing cultures or a personal wall within which inspires you to write. A great opportunity for all ages to be involved .

FREE Workshops were run by John Paul O’Neill to support the project and inspire everyone to join in and write a poem or a short story. These were at Eltham Library on 30th January 2018 ( Write a poem/short story – workshop  for adults) and on 3 Feb 2018 2 (Write a poem. Family wokrshop for all ages). These workshops were very successful !

Poems and short stories have now been completed and there were a high level of excellent. entries. The celebratory event with an exhibition and awards took place on  World Book Night 23rd April 2018 at Eltham library and was a great success with over 300 people attending . There were awards for children and adults. We were also entertained by the local Eltham ‘Make a Noise’ Choir The exhibition of a range of entries was on display at Eltham and New Eltham libraries

It is planned that a selection of entries will published in a book of the same name.

The Acting Class – film screening

Eltham Arts were delighted to host a screening of ‘The Acting Class’ at Bob Hope Theatre as a part of their WALL project on Wed 21st Feb 2018 . This film which focused on the class barriers within the acting profession led to a lively Q and A with the Directors , Tom Stocks and Labour politician Trevor Macfarlane. A good evening with a thought provoking film.

The Acting Class (D.O’Neill & M.Wayne, 2017, 77mins)

All the world’s a stage but not all the players are equal. When Tom Stocks, a young man from Bolton has to turn down a chance to study at the East 15 drama school because he cannot afford the fees, he sets up a campaign to highlight socio-economic exclusion in the arts. Tom is not alone. Actors from working class backgrounds are struggling to get in and get on in an industry stacked against them. Established actors worry about where the next generation of talent from modest backgrounds is going to come from. Christopher Eccleston, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Maxine Peake and Samuel West are among those who feature in this film talking about the barriers to success. And this is an issue not just for those who see their dreams thwarted because they do not have the ‘bank of mom and dad’ to back them.  Who gets to be on our stages and screens matters to all of us. Whose stories get told, what images we have of ourselves, who we think ‘we’ are, helps shape our individual and national identities.

Awarded Best UK Feature Film by the Labour Film festival 2017.

Eltham Music Festival

RockChoir-WideShot-Crowd

Eltham locals and visitors have just enjoyed another great musical July! In the heart of Eltham High Street, at the newly redeveloped Passey Place, audiences turned up for the many talented musical acts making the most of this new community outdoor space.

Each Saturday, on 1, 8 and 15 July, saw local musicians, singers, choirs and dancers come together to entertain in this Royal Greenwich and Eltham Arts Music Festival, part of the Royal Greenwich Festivals season.Progr-Slanted-2017

Here are just some of the performers – how many of these fabulous acts  did you see?

WALL – The Film

Wall-Camera-woman-Capture

We are exploring the possibility of making a film as part of the WALL project.

In discussion with local film maker and photographer Robert Piwko we hope to produce a 20 min film which explores the issues of walls in our community.

  • What is a wall?
  • What does the word ‘wall‘ mean to you?
  • A wall can be a protector but also be a barrier.

We are challenging people to think about walls and express their ideas in our multi media project. Our aim is to bring people together through the arts, and this part of the project will involve people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.  The film is a spine to the WALL project. However, it will not just record the individual projects and events, it will look deeper into the issues raised and lessons learnt during the project.

The film will include interviews with local people and celebrate the creativity of the projects which evolve as the project progresses over the next year.

A Library, a Gallery and a Pub scoop first-ever Eltham Arts Awards

Three community-minded contributors to the cultural life of Eltham scooped awards recently. The first-time ever Eltham Arts Awards 2016 were made at a finale celebration on 20 November marking the end of the three-week long Eltham Arts Winter Festival 2016.

We made our Awards to three local organisations for outstanding contributions to community arts. Awards were presented – by Eltham MP Clive Efford and Greenwich Arts & Culture Councillor Denise Scott-MacDonald – to St Thomas More Secondary School’s innovative SE9 Container Gallery, to the hard-working Eltham Library and also to the White Hart pub for their support and community fundraising.

andrewdownie-receivesaward-fromcliveefford

Presenting the Eltham Arts Award for the SE9 Container Gallery to Andrew Downie, the Head of Art at St Thomas More, Mr Efford said, ” As someone who has visited the SE9 Container Gallery at St Thomas More School many times and purchased a piece of art displayed there I was pleased to give the award.”

We made this Award because the SE9 Container gallery has brought art to the centre of Eltham with exhibitions of a high quality. This has also given students a chance to display their work and engage in community projects as well as providing wider artistic perspectives to the local population.

cllrdenisescott-macdonald-awardto-library

Dedicated Eltham Library staff Paula Bellamy and Miriam Storey received their award from Councillor Denise Scott-MacDonald who paid tribute to their work saying, “I get really positive feedback wherever I go…so many people are so proud of the library and excited by the work of staff there.”  Paula Bellamy said she was, “Thrilled to bits to win. We are proud to serve wonderful Eltham!”

Alex Mayers, Co-Director of the White Hart Pub, received the award on behalf of White Hart owners Simon Hinchley-Robson & David Hinchley-Robson.  We think this that this popular Eltham-based pub was an excellent example of how local businesses and the arts can work together. The White Hart not only works closely with the Bob Hope Theatre, it provides quiz nights which support many local groups including Eltham Arts, enabling arts events to take place.

ea-whitehartalexgetgaward

Chuffed with the recognition, the White Hart reacted that, “From day one we always wanted to be a hub for the community… It was only when being told when receiving the award we realised how much we do. Within the time we’ve been here we are proud to have raised over £65,000 for local charities with our community supported activities. It brought tears to our eyes when these things were acknowledged and we are honoured to serve such a close knit community.”

eaa-se9-glassaward
The unique Awards were specially-commissioned by Eltham Arts and made by Eltham glass work artist Jean Bright

The Awards were a fitting conclusion to the Eltham Arts Winter Festival this year which saw hundreds of visitors enjoy the art, live music, theatre and cultural activities which the SE9 area had to offer. The finale party and Awards Ceremony on 20 November took place at Eltham’s White Hart pub and saw singers-songwriters perform their original songs.

It was great to see so many supporters attended, including a number of local Councillors.  Clive Efford MP said, “It was a really great night. Lots of laughs and really talented musicians.” The Eltham Arts Committee were delighted once again to see such community spirit on show and for the arts to be taking centre stage in Eltham.
